Notes and Thoughts after Second Semester with MA 301

The "transition" course

  • it's NOT just a "transition to proofs" — also a transition to…
    • …dealing with objects (a.k.a. things represented by variables) that are not numbers/vectors/matrices
    • …dealing with objects that are not FINITE
    • …making statements (i.e., "saying things" as opposed to "doing things") as the primary focus
    • …the importance of symbols and words being what they mean as opposed to what you do with them

Learning goals

  • be able to translate the logical form of a statement into the structure of a proof for the statement
  • be able to articulate the structure of a proof by induction (even without knowing the meaning of the statement)
